Children’s Dentistry

We all know how important the first few visits to dentist is important for a young child. At King Street Dental Practice we believe a positive and friendly early visit will help children to develop positive associations about coming to se the dentist and enable you to provide a good foundation for your child’s future oral health.

We believe that encouraging good oral health habits in young children is the best way to ensure they continue to care for their teeth and gums as they grow. Our children’s dentistry philosophy is based around this concept, and we educate our little patients with a fun, relaxed approach that will ease their worries and make their visit a pleasant experience.

How soon should my child see a dentist?

A child’s first visit to the dentist can start as early as the age of about 2. During the first visit the dentist will assess if your child is comfortable interacting with the team and if he/she copes well in the clinical environment. Sometimes the child will feel less anxious if one of the parents sit with them on the dental chair.

The dentist will introduce the concept of looking in their mouth and teeth over a series of small steps.  We have a TV attached to the dental chair the dentist can play cartoons which usually helps calming your child down.

During your child visit, the dentist will usually check for good oral hygiene habits, the gums , teeth and the development of the jaws and breathing/swallowing patterns.

Tips to prepare your child

– Talk about the positive points of going to the dentist, such as ridding in the special dental chair and having beautiful healthy teeth.

– There are some children’s books about visiting the dentist which could help to explain what goes on during a dental visit.

– If possible, schedule appointments at the time of the day they are usually relaxed and more cooperative – not just before naptime is due!

Regular check ups will not only enable the dentist to monitor the development and oral health of your child, but also will help them to feel less uneasy and more receptive to dental treatment should they need it.
