Which Sedation Option Is Right for You?
Every patient is different. Our friendly team will discuss your level of anxiety, medical history, and the type of treatment you need to recommend the safest and most effective sedation option for you.
At King Street Dental, our goal is to ensure your visit is comfortable, safe, and stress-free.
Ready to Experience Dentistry Without Fear?
If you’ve been delaying dental treatment because of anxiety, we can help. Call us today on 02 6672 1788 or book online to find out which sedation option is right for you.
We offer three levels of sedation to suit your needs
1. Nitrous Oxide (Happy Gas)
A gentle and flexible option for children and adults.
Nitrous oxide, often called “happy gas,” is one of the safest and most widely used sedation methods. It’s perfect for patients who experience mild anxiety or need a little extra help relaxing in the dental chair.
How it works:
You’ll wear a small mask over your nose that delivers a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen.
Within minutes, you’ll feel lighter, calmer, and more comfortable.
The level of sedation can be adjusted instantly during your treatment.
Once the mask is removed, the effects wear off quickly, and you can usually drive yourself home.
Benefits:
Very safe and suitable for both adults and children
Fast-acting and wears off within minutes
You remain fully conscious and can communicate easily
Helps reduce gag reflex and makes long appointments easier
Most patients are able to resume normal activities straight after treatment
Cost:
The cost of nitrous oxide depends on the length of your appointment. It is usually charged in 30-minute intervals at $80 per 30 minutes. This makes it an affordable and flexible option, especially for shorter procedures.
Things to know:
Best for patients with mild to moderate anxiety
Not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy or for certain health conditions (we’ll review your medical history)
2. Oral Sedation (Sedation Pills)
Simple, needle-free, and cost-effective.
Oral sedation uses a prescribed tablet to help you feel calm and relaxed during your dental visit. It’s easy to take and works well for patients with moderate anxiety.
How it works:
You’ll take a medication (commonly a benzodiazepine such as Valium or Temazepam) about an hour before your procedure.
The medication reduces anxiety and creates a sense of relaxation.
You’ll remain awake but may feel drowsy and less aware of the procedure.
Benefits:
No needles required
Easy to take before your appointment
Reduces fear, stress, and gag reflex
Can be combined with local anaesthetic for pain-free treatment
Time seems to pass quickly, and many patients recall very little of the procedure
Cost:
Oral sedation is the most affordable sedation option, with each pill typically costing only $3–$5 from the chemist. It’s a budget-friendly way to ease anxiety during your dental visit.
Things to know:
You’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment
Effects may last several hours after treatment, so you should rest for the remainder of the day
A medical review is required to ensure it’s safe for you
3. IV Sedation (with an Anaesthetist)
For deep relaxation and peace of mind.
Intravenous (IV) sedation is sometimes called “twilight sedation” or “sleep dentistry.” At King Street Dental, IV sedation is performed by a qualified anaesthetist who works alongside our dental team to ensure your safety at every stage.
How it works:
A small cannula is placed in your arm or hand, delivering sedation medication directly into your bloodstream.
You’ll quickly drift into a deeply relaxed, dreamlike state.
You’ll be monitored continuously by the anaesthetist, ensuring your safety throughout the procedure.
Benefits:
Ideal for patients with high anxiety or phobia
Allows more complex treatments (such as implants, extractions, or All-on-X procedures) to be done comfortably in one visit
You remain in a controlled, safe state with little or no memory of the procedure
Deeply relaxing, minimising awareness of sights, sounds, and sensations
Cost:
The cost of IV sedation varies depending on the length of treatment and the anaesthetist’s professional fees. A detailed estimate will be provided before your appointment.
